Teaching our children to love and respect our planet and living by example is our nursery’s mission. Whilst this Ethos theme is being embedded in our daily practice, we also provide children with awe-inspiring experiences and teach them about the importance of Loving the Planet in playful and child-friendly ways.
We teach the children the motto ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ and find ways to eliminate the throw away culture we live in, e.g., by inviting parents to bring in old resources that we then upcycle, creating our own Recycling Boxes and learning about waste separation or buying zero plastic packaging fruits and vegetables from our local greengrocer on a weekly basis.
In line with this, we have also taken the children on an exciting trip to a local Recycling Centre where we dropped off electric items collected by our nursery community. We spoke about what ‘recycling’ means, explaining this to the children in an age-appropriate way.
Recycling is a crucial aspect and in line with our ‘Loving the Planet’ Ethos theme. We are passionate to educate the children in our care about the importance of protecting the environment as well as being role models to them. Recycling brings along plenty of benefits, from saving energy, protecting the Ecosystems and Wildlife to reducing Carbon Emissions.
Appreciating our planet also means giving it a little bit of love, every day, and learning about it in many ways. The best way to show the world love, is by learning about it, hence we encourage the children to spend plenty of time outdoors, visiting local playgrounds and parks and taking the time to appreciate the nature we see.
Providing plants, flowers and herbs in our nursery classrooms is also an amazing way to learn about the process of growth, taking on responsibility looking after them and getting in contact with nature. The children love watching our flowers from a local garden centre, blossom and enjoy their little herb gardens, adding some delicious flavours to their favourite meals at nursery.
